I have a pewter statue of a cute little donkey that I sometimes take to poker tournaments as a card protector. His name is, ‘Don Chabea’ donkey. He is to remind me, ‘don’t you be a donkey.’ Well, you can be a donkey in several ways in poker: over confidence, making bad plays, misreading an opponent, and forgetting to tip the cocktail waitress. With experience these instances should become rare, if not nonexistent. One would think that, given my experience I would be immune to playing like a donkey. But NOOOO, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I recently committed all of these errors in perfect donkey-like form.

(click on the article title to read the rest)

The importance of staying in shape while you’re playing in a tournament cannot be over emphasized. Lack of focus, lethargy, sore back, forgetting to over-tip the waitress (yes, I’m going to beat that joke to death) are all major distractions to your poker game. Poker tournaments are long and grueling. If you are to do your best you need to stay in shape while you are on the road. Exercise is the answer, but it’s difficult to find the time, after all you just flew into town, checked into your hotel room, and registered for your tournament. What can you do?

(click on the article title to read the rest)

Australian citizen and businessman Daniel Tzvetkoff, arrested earlier this year in Las Vegas on suspicion of involvement in allegedly illegal online payment processing within the poker industry, has been released on bail from a New York prison according to a report from the Courier-Mail. The Australian newspaper which broke the story says the one-time multi-millionaire, who authorities believe processed $500 million in online poker payments, has entered a plea to a serious criminal charge. He was released on August 23 and will be returned for trial in June 2011. His fiancée in Australia has recently given birth to their child and the paper suggests Tzvetkoff could be co-operating with prosecutors.

I once made what I thought was a big mistake in tournament play (I showed up—just kidding). Because I was convinced it was a mistake, I asked some fellow pros what they would have done in that spot. Over the course of several months, I asked Chris Ferguson, Freddie Deeb, Annie Duke, and dozens of other pros and they all told me that they would have done exactly what I’d done. Are you curious what the situation was yet? Here’s the deal (literally):

It was in the Senior Event (that’s right, everyone there was at least in their fourth year of high school) during the 2005 36th Annual World Series of Poker at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas. 825 players entered this event, but at this point in the tournament, there were only 50 players left.

(Click on the title to read the rest of this article.)

Math--I hate math. 2 times 2 is 4. (Or is it 2 times 2 are 4? Is that a math question or an English question? Hmmmm.) Now that I have us all sufficiently confused, let’s move on. Why do we need to know math for poker? Ahaa! So we can get the mathematical advantage by making the correct play when the odds are in our favor.

This is how casinos make money; they have a mathematical advantage on every game on the floor. While anyone on any given day can beat the odds if they are lucky, over time the luck factor disappears and the house will make what the math dictates. Some games are better than others, but how do you know unless you know the math?

(Click on the title to read the rest of this article.)

Here is a simple exercise that I recommend for new players. Take a 52 card deck, shuffle it several times, and deal three cards face up. Pretend that you’re looking at the flop in a game that you’re playing. Now, ask yourself these questions: “What is the best possible hand? What is the best possible draw? What did I have for breakfast?” (Okay, you can scratch that last question. I was just checking to see if you were paying attention.)

These are the things to look for: Is the board paired? (A full house and quads are only possible if the board is paired.) Are the cards all the same suit? (A flush is only possible if there are three cards of the same suit on the board or if you’re near a toilet—sorry, I’ll try to be serious.) How wide is the gap between the cards? (If the gap is wider than two cards between each card, a straight is not possible.)

(Click the title to read the rest of this article.)

In the spirit of constantly repeating myself, let’s start where we left off in my last article. Knowledge is power in poker. If you play the way I tell you to, you will not be playing very many hands, so you’ll have time to do the most important part of poker: overtip the cocktail waitress (just kidding, let’s try that again).

Knowledge is power in poker. If you play the way I tell you to, you will not be playing very many hands so you will have time to do the most important part of poker: GATHER INFORMATION. (How much was in the pot when he called? What odds was the pot laying him? Did he fold to a small raise? Did he overtip the cocktail waitress?)

So, what do we need to do in order to gather information? PAY ATTENTION. (For those of you who answered, "Overtip the cocktail waitress," you’re my kind of folks.)

(click on the article title to read the rest)

Tribal casinos in over 30 states will soon be offering online poker as a result of a deal announced yesterday between the Atlantis Internet Group (ATIG) and Cake Gaming. The private gaming network, known as Casino Gateway Network (CGN) and backed by the legal opinion of the National Indian Gaming Commission, allows players to play on a private Wide Area Progressive (WAP) network, and, therefore, it is not considered illegal online gaming according to ATIG. Donald L. Bailey, chief executive officer of ATIG said, "Our Indian version of the CGN, called the ‘Tribal Gaming Network’ (‘TGN’) offers an immediate and legal solution to Indian casinos nationwide, providing the largest online poker network in the U.S. This is a significant milestone for ATIG and Cake, and will become an immediate economical shot in the arm for Tribes and states facing deficits nationwide.”
